SSH
Reach a target through one SSH jump host
By Aime Tech Media Limited · AnyPane
AnyPane can open an SSH session directly, or through one jump host you already control. It does not provide the jump host or a network path.
What you can select
On an SSH connection, the Route section has a Jump Host picker. Direct connection is the default. The other choices are SSH connections you have already saved, and the one you pick must itself stay a direct connection.
Sign in with a password or an OpenSSH Ed25519 private key. RSA keys, keyboard-interactive/OTP, SSH Agent, and ProxyCommand are not supported.
Set it up
- Save an SSH connection for the jump host with its own address, username and credential. Keep its Route set to Direct connection. Make sure your device can reach it.
- Create or edit the target SSH connection: address, SSH port, username, and credential.
- Under Route, choose one saved direct SSH connection as the Jump Host. Leave Direct connection selected when you can reach the target yourself.
- Chained jump hosts aren’t supported. Do not try to use a connection that already has its own jump host.
- Save the connection. Confirm the server’s SHA-256 fingerprint through a trusted channel before accepting it.
- Add the connection to a workspace to open a terminal.
iPhone shows one active pane at a time. iPad and Mac can place this session beside other SSH or VNC panes, up to four in that workspace.
If the target does not connect
Check the two parts of the route separately: your device must reach the jump host, and the jump host must reach the target’s SSH address and port. The two servers may use different usernames and credentials. The jump host’s SSH server must permit TCP forwarding to the target.
A changed host fingerprint is not a reason to skip verification. Confirm the new fingerprint with the server administrator through a trusted channel before updating trust in the connection details.
Limits
Multi-hop jump chains are not supported. AnyPane also has no Mosh, SFTP, or automatic reconnection. On iPhone and iPad, a connection can stop in the background; reconnect manually. Minimum systems: iOS/iPadOS 17 and macOS 15.
